Sokoto governor approves N70k minimum wage for civil servants

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the payment of the newly revised national minimum wage of N70,000 to all state civil servants, local government employees, and staff of the Local Government Education Authority, effective from Monday.

This move aligns with the Federal Government’s directive on the updated minimum wage and highlights the governor’s focus on improving the welfare of workers in the state.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, Governor Aliyu encouraged workers to show their appreciation for the wage increase by demonstrating dedication, punctuality, and improved productivity. He further reassured civil servants that salary payments will continue to be made regularly between the 19th and 22nd of each month.

Additionally, Governor Aliyu has placed a strong emphasis on clearing unpaid gratuities for retirees. His administration has allocated N500 million monthly for this purpose, along with N300 million earmarked to settle gratuities for retirees from 2023 onward. The governor’s aim is to ensure that no civil servant is left owed any gratuities by the end of his tenure, a stark contrast to the previous administration, which saw delays in salary payments of over 50 days.

These initiatives have been widely praised by stakeholders, who view them as a demonstration of Governor Aliyu’s commitment to the welfare of state workers. The measures are expected to significantly boost morale and enhance productivity, further solidifying his reputation as a proactive and accountable leader in Sokoto State.
