SSAs on garden egg, yam, pepper will boost export — Enugu LG chair

The Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area in Enugu State, Dr. Eric Odo, has addressed criticism over his recent appointments of Senior Special Assistants on Agriculture, Garden Egg, Yam, and Pepper.

He described the move as a strategic initiative to boost the production of these crops, satisfy local demand, and expand export opportunities.

Dr. Odo had appointed Ezeugwu Ogbonna as Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture (Yam and Pepper). The appointment, dated November 1, was communicated in an official letter stating:

“I am pleased to inform you that the executive chairman Igbo Etiti LGA has approved your appointment as senior special assistant to the local government chairman on agriculture (yam and pepper).

“You should report to the executive chairman Igbo Etiti LGA, Ogbede, for briefing and deployment.

“It is pertinent to note that this is not a career civil service appointment but a temporary appointment which you hold at the pleasure of the executive chairman of Igbo Etiti LGA.”

Similarly, Nwodo Ugonna was appointed as Special Adviser on Agriculture (Garden Egg and Pepper).

Responding to public reactions, Dr. Odo emphasized that the appointments were informed by Igbo-Etiti’s comparative advantage in cultivating garden egg, yam, and pepper. According to him, engaging individuals with the expertise to develop these sectors was essential for enhancing local agricultural production and creating economic value.

He explained, “It is important to point out that Igbo-Etiti does well in growing these crops. The comparative advantage we have necessitates engaging individuals who can help develop this aspect of agriculture.”

He added that the initiative aims to provide local farmers with the resources, support, and expertise needed to improve productivity, market access, and income.

“In essence,” he stated, “the appointment, which is wrongly misunderstood by disgruntled individuals, bad losers, and opposition, reinforces my determination to create a thriving local economy based on the strengths and potentials of Igbo-Etiti’s agricultural landscape.”

Dr. Odo noted that the decision was carefully thought out and aligned with both short-term and long-term development goals. He highlighted its potential to enhance agricultural productivity, create jobs, and uplift farmers and communities.

He urged the public to disregard any negative commentary, stating, “These laudable and visionary efforts to reposition Igbo-Etiti LGA for massive food production and sustainable development should not be discredited.”

The chairman reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a thriving agricultural sector that would benefit the local economy and contribute to sustainable growth in the region.
