Sunak elected Conservative leader, to become UK PM

Former United Kingdom finance minister, Rishi Sunak, has been elected the new leader of the conservative party in the UK parliament.

According to Al Jazeera, this development will see him become Britain’s third prime minister in less than two months on Monday, following the resignation of Lizz Truss.

Truss lasted just 44 days before she quit over an economic policy that trashed the country’s economic credibility.

Sunak is tasked with restoring stability to a country reeling from years of political and economic turmoil.

Sunak beat sole challenger Penny Mordaunt after Boris Johnson, the former premier, dropped out on Sunday evening.

Boris Johnson had resigned from the race, admitting that he could no longer unite their party following one of the most turbulent periods in British political history.
