Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District, has voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bill currently before the National Assembly.
In a statement on Thursday, Sani urged Northern governors to reconsider their opposition to the bill, emphasizing that it does not pose a threat to the interests of the North.
According to Sani, the bill is a key initiative by President Tinubu aimed at strengthening tax administration in Nigeria by simplifying its operations and enforcement.
He encouraged the National Assembly to prioritize the bill, urging Northerners to set aside any biases and consider the potential benefits it offers.
“The Tax Reform Bill is not inimical to the North or any part of this country,” Sani said. “It is in fact economically beneficial and fair to all parts. People should keep aside sentiments and read the bill carefully.”
Describing the bill as “a comprehensive and bold move to harmonize and simplify tax administration,” Sani explained that the reform would streamline operations, improve enforcement, and help generate more revenue for both the country and the states. He also noted that the bill aims to tackle corruption related to tax waivers that have previously favored certain business elites.
“There is nowhere in the document where any region will be shortchanged or taxes will be increased or jobs will be lost,” Sani added.
He concluded by urging Northern governors to withdraw their rejection of the bill, advising them to carefully review its contents and make constructive inputs. “NASS must treat this important bill with all seriousness,” Sani stressed.
