The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has underscored the importance of embracing technology to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against corruption.
Speaking at the inauguration of the students’ anti-corruption vanguard in Abuja on Tuesday, ICPC Secretary Clifford Oparaodu, represented by Demola Bakare, Acting Director of Public Enlightenment and Education, remarked, “Embracing technology can be a game-changer in our fight against corruption. We are living in an era of unprecedented technological advancements, and Nigerian youths have proven themselves adept at utilising these tools.”
He emphasized the role of technology in enhancing transparency, accountability, and governance. “We must harness the power of technology to increase transparency, enhance accountability, and improve governance,” he said. “Mobilising our coding skills, data analysis abilities, and social media prowess, we can expose corrupt practices, track public spending, and facilitate citizen participation in anti-corruption initiatives.”
Oparaodu highlighted Nigeria’s youthful population—60 percent of whom are under 30—as a key asset for shaping the nation’s future. He noted that young people possess the passion, energy, and creativity necessary to combat corruption effectively.
To harness this potential, he called for platforms where young Nigerians from various backgrounds can collaborate and work collectively toward a corruption-free Nigeria.
“We need to establish platforms where young Nigerians from diverse backgrounds can come together, share ideas, and work collectively towards a corruption-free Nigeria,” he said.
He encouraged partnerships between civil society organisations, academic institutions, and youth-led initiatives to foster anti-corruption champions.
Oparaodu expressed his confidence in the youth’s pivotal role in the anti-corruption movement. “By educating ourselves, leveraging technology, engaging in politics of development, and fostering collaboration, we can effect real change in our society,” he stated. “The establishment of the students’ anti-corruption vanguard is a testament to our commitment to integrity and accountability. Through this platform, you will have the opportunity to educate your peers, raise awareness about the danger of corruption, and advocate for transparency in all spheres of life, especially among yourselves and in your various institutions.”
He urged the students to embrace the opportunity to be agents of change and collaborate closely with the ICPC, which will equip them with tools and guidance to lead the fight against corruption effectively.
