Three women have made history in Cross River State by emerging as chairmen-elect of local government areas.
They were among 18 chairmen-elect who won the November 2 local council elections, held across 18 local government areas and 196 wards in the state.
The elections were held in November 2, 2024. Dr. Ekong Boco, Chairman of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, announced the winners and presented certificates of return to the elected chairmen.
The newly elected officials have been urged to prioritize the needs of their constituents, promote transparency, and fulfill their electoral commitments. Governor Bassey Otu’s chief of staff, Emmanuel Ironbar, emphasized the importance of effective governance and making a positive impact on the lives of the people in Cross River State, according to Daily Post.
However, Senator Jarigbe Agom criticized the declaration, citing concerns over democratic integrity and alleged manipulation by the APC-led government.
Despite this, the elected chairmen will assume office amidst high expectations from their constituents and the state government. Their success will be crucial in showcasing effective governance and promoting development in Cross River State.
“I make this statement not just as a senator but as a voice for true democracy,” he said.
” This unfortunate episode is a symptom of the broader disease plaguing our democratic institutions nationwide, revealing a troubling pattern that must be confronted if we are to protect the integrity of our democracy,” Jarigbe stated.
