President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory in the December 7 general election.
This came after Mahama’s opponent, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat even before the official announcement by Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
In a telephone conversation with Mahama, President Tinubu expressed optimism that Mahama’s return to power would contribute to stabilising the Economic Community of West African States where Tinubu currently serves as chairman.
President Tinubu commended the people of Ghana for their steadfast commitment to democracy, as demonstrated by the peaceful conduct of both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
He remarked, “Ghanaians have shown the world once again that democracy remains the preferred path to achieving political stability, economic development, social justice, and transparent governance in Africa.”
He also praised Vice President Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party candidate, for his gracious concession, noting that it reinforced Ghana’s democratic values.
Tinubu described Mahama’s victory as a testament to the Ghanaian people’s trust in his leadership and vision, saying, “Your return to Jubilee House reflects your people’s belief in your stewardship and potential to take Ghana to greater heights.”
Mahama, who previously served as President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017, brings decades of public service experience. He was Vice President from 2009 to 2012, a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2009, and held deputy and ministerial roles between 1998 and 2001.
President Tinubu renewed his commitment to fostering the close relationship between Nigeria and Ghana, emphasizing shared history, cultural ties, and mutual goals. “Our nations are united by common values: democracy, the rule of law, economic integration, and Pan-African aspirations,” he affirmed.
Tinubu also acknowledged the outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his exemplary leadership and contributions to Ghana’s progress and regional stability, thanking him for his service to the nation and the region.
Looking ahead, President Tinubu expressed eagerness to collaborate with Mahama’s incoming administration to strengthen bilateral ties across various sectors and work towards a brighter future for the West African region.
