President Bola Tinubu has formally sought the Senate’s confirmation of Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff.
This request was detailed in a letter presented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The president’s request is in accordance with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, which govern military appointments.
Tinubu praised Oluyede for his “exceptional professionalism and unwavering commitment to national security and stability,” qualities that have been evident during his tenure as Acting Chief of Army Staff. He emphasized that Oluyede’s confirmation would provide the Nigerian Army with continuity and effective leadership in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
“His qualifications, experience, and contributions make him well suited for this vital role,” Tinubu stated, urging the Senate to expedite the screening and confirmation process. He expressed confidence in Oluyede’s capacity to advance the Nigerian Armed Forces’ mission to maintain security and stability across the country. “The Nigerian Army requires capable and consistent leadership to address the nation’s security challenges effectively,” the president added.
The Senate has referred the nomination to its Committee on the Army for evaluation, instructing the committee to report back to the plenary for further consideration.
Lieutenant-General Oluyede assumed the position of Acting Chief of Army Staff following the illness and subsequent passing of his predecessor, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja. Tinubu highlighted Oluyede’s leadership as crucial in navigating the nation’s security landscape, asserting that his confirmation would enhance efforts to ensure peace and stability across Nigeria.
