United States tech billionaire, Elon Musk, sparked controversy on Monday morning with a now-deleted post on X, formerly Twitter, questioning why former US president Donald Trump faced two apparent assassination attempts while President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris haven’t.
Musk wrote, “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala.”
Initially, he resisted calls to delete the post, doubling down with, “No one has even tried to do so is the point I’m making and no one will.”
However, after another user suggested his intent could be misunderstood, Musk conceded, “Fair enough. I don’t want to do what they have done, even in jest.”
Musk later claimed the post was meant to be humorous, but the incident raised eyebrows, especially given his strengthened relationship with Trump.
Musk endorsed Trump after an assassination attempt in July and even hosted him for an interview on X in August.
This isn’t the first time Musk’s comments have generated controversy. He’s spoken out against the progressive “woke mind virus” and warned of impending “doom” if Democrats remain in power. Musk has also shared conspiracy theories and fake images, including AI-generated photos depicting Kamala Harris with communist symbols.
The Secret Service, responsible for investigating threats against the president and vice president, declined to comment.
X also remained silent on whether Musk’s posts violated their terms of service, which prohibit promoting violent acts.
Despite deleting the post, Musk responded to a similar one with a thinking face emoji, highlighting how none of the four U.S. presidents before Trump faced assassination attempts.
