The Ondo State Council of the Trade Union Congress has officially declared its support for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressives Congress candidate in the upcoming governorship election on November 16.
The decision was announced during a congress held on Tuesday in Akure.
TUC State Chairman, Clement Fatuase, explained that the endorsement was the result of a unanimous agreement by both current and past leaders of the congress’s 23 active affiliate unions.
Fatuase commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his support of workers, including the approval of a new minimum wage of N73,000 and sponsoring over 100 workers to the South-West Labour Summit in Ibadan.
The chairman also highlighted other achievements of the Aiyedatiwa administration, such as a recruitment drive for teachers in primary and secondary schools and the appointment of permanent secretaries and tutors-general.
Fatuase noted that in a meeting on October 31, the congress critically reviewed the governor’s performance, giving him an “excellent” rating for his dedication to workers’ welfare, which led to the union’s decision to show support.
Fatuase also called for the full implementation of a housing scheme for civil servants, including affordable land allocations, and emphasized the need for land to support civil servants interested in agricultural ventures.
In response, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed gratitude to the TUC for its support and harmonious relationship with his administration. He acknowledged the union’s recognition of his achievements, stressing that his policies have been focused on improving the welfare of the people of Ondo State, according to Peoples Gazette.
The governor also addressed concerns about salary payments, asserting that timely wage disbursements are a workers’ right, not a favor. He reiterated his commitment to ongoing training and capacity building to ensure that public servants deliver quality and efficient services for the state.
“In a meeting held on Thursday, 31st October 2024, the activities of the present administration were critically analysed. Mr governor was rated excellent, compelling the congress to reciprocate the gesture for his dedication to workers’ welfare,” he said.
