Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has proposed a constitutional amendment to permit United States President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office.
Straight Arrow News reported that the resolution was submitted on Thursday, with Ogles asserting that Trump’s leadership is crucial for addressing the nation’s challenges and restoring its global stature.
“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness. He must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” Ogles declared.
Currently, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution bars any individual from being elected president more than twice. The amendment was ratified in 1951, following Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four-term presidency from 1933 to 1945, which raised concerns about unchecked executive power and led to the institutionalisation of a two-term limit.
Ogles emphasised the urgency of the proposed amendment, stating, “We must provide Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.”
Although Trump has previously dismissed the idea of pursuing a third term, he joked about the possibility after his victory in the 2024 presidential election. “Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out,’” Trump remarked humorously.
Ogles also commended Trump’s executive actions during his second term, highlighting initiatives on border security, energy independence, gender identity policies, and the withdrawal from the World Health Organization as key accomplishments.
The process of amending the Constitution is arduous. Despite Republicans holding a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, the resolution would require substantial bipartisan backing and ratification by three-fourths of the states to succeed.
