The United States Government has repatriated $52.88 million linked to former Nigerian Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
This development was formalised during the signing of the Assets Return Agreement at the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters in Abuja on Friday. The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., led the U.S. delegation, while the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, signed on behalf of Nigeria.
According to the AGF, the repatriated sum resulted from the forfeiture of Galactica assets traced to Alison-Madueke and her associates. He described the agreement as a significant step in the fight against corruption and an indication of the shared commitment between Nigeria and the U.S.
“This development underscores the strong partnership between our two nations in combating corruption. It also demonstrates the United States’ dedication to facilitating restitution and supporting integrity and accountability in governance,” Fagbemi said.
The AGF assured that the funds would be transparently and accountably utilised, with disbursement overseen by the World Bank and the International Institute for Justice.
He stated, “Measures have been put in place to ensure that the repatriated funds are not only disbursed but also utilised transparently and accountably. The World Bank and IIJ will oversee the utilisation, with periodic reports forwarded to both Nigeria and the U.S. on the implementation of the projects.
“This robust framework will guarantee that the funds are effectively used for the full benefit of the Nigerian people, in line with the United Nations Convention against Corruption and the Global Forum on Asset Recovery principles,” Fagbemi added.
The ceremony highlighted ongoing efforts by both countries to ensure that proceeds of corruption are returned and used to benefit the citizens directly, fostering transparency and trust in governance.
