The lawmaker representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Ibrahim Oloriegbe, has explained that the Senators who met with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, did so to save the All Progressives Congress.

Premium Politics had earlier reported that Buhari on Tuesday met with aggrieved Senators of the party over the claims of mass defection to opposition parties over the loss of their re-election bids.

Oloriegbe who was among the aggrieved Senators who visited the President on Tuesday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Wednesday explained that the last primary elections were marred with various irregularities.

He said, “The last primary elections conducted by our party did not follow democratic processes; what we had was a situation which saw certain individuals select their preferred candidates.”

He also explained that instead of having a free and fair electoral process, the governors made sure that only their candidates were voted for.

“The primary election process ought to start with the election of delegates but in almost all the states, there was no election of delegates, what we had was a selection of delegates by the governors.

“The delegates election was meant to be conducted before the primary election; but then, there was nothing and all we saw was a delegates list from nowhere.”

He added that the Senators met with the President because they wanted to properly address the situation.

“We are not aggrieved Senators, we are concerned and Progressives lawmakers who believe in the ideals of the Party but we won’t tolerate the injustice in the Party from certain individuals.

“We can’t allow the party to go on like this and that was why we met the President who also wanted to resolve issues. What we want is that this issue be transparently resolved,” he noted
