Why Tinubu is prioritising legacy projects — Umahi

The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has revealed why President Bola Tinubu is commitment to legacy projects.

According to the minister, Tinubu is committed to overhauling Nigeria’s transportation network through ambitious road infrastructure projects.

In a statement on Monday issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Orji Uchenna Orji, Umahi highlighted four legacy projects set to redefine connectivity across the country.

According to Orji, the projects signify unprecedented progress in African infrastructure development:

– 750 km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

– 1,068 km Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway

– 482 km Calabar-Abuja Superhighway

– 439 km Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Highway

Features and Impact of the Calabar-Abuja Superhighway

Among the projects, the Calabar-Abuja Superhighway stands out as a critical link between the South-South, South-East, and the nation’s capital. Orji detailed its path, stating, “The Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Kogi-Nasarawa-Abuja Superhighway begins from the spur of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Cross River State, traverses Enugu, Abakaliki, and Ogoja (Trans-Saharan Highway) in Ebonyi State, and crosses Benue, Kogi (spanning River Benue at Bagana), and Nasarawa States, culminating in Apo, Abuja.”

The project will feature:

– Six lanes, with three on each side, separated by landscaped medians, street lighting, and digital signage.

– A 1.35 km bridge over the River Benue at Bagana and a 400-meter bridge over the Ebom River in Cross River State.

– Several smaller bridges, interchanges, and overpasses along its length.

Orji emphasized the road’s role in reducing travel time, describing it as the fastest route from the South-South to Abuja.

“This road will stimulate the emergence of new cities and infrastructural development along the corridor. It will enhance socio-economic activities, boost development, and connect the Calabar Export Processing Zone to international markets, including the Republic of Cameroon,” he explained.

Regional and Economic Significance

The four projects are designed to unlock Nigeria’s economic potential, connecting major agricultural, industrial, and economic corridors. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, for example, aims to enhance coastal connectivity, while the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway links key trade zones in northern and southwestern Nigeria.

Umahi underscored President Tinubu’s vision, stating that these projects are pivotal for fostering regional integration and economic growth.

“The administration is resolute in ensuring that these transformative initiatives cement Tinubu’s legacy in Nigeria’s transportation history,” Umahi remarked.
