Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, during the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration held in Gusau, addressed the issue of multiple salary payments to civil servants in the state. He pledged to tackle this issue decisively as part of his administration’s efforts to clean up the state civil service.
“I am not impressed with workers’ take-home pay and the working conditions in the state. However, before deciding on the minimum wage, I need to accurately determine the number of genuine workers,” the governor stated.
He urged workers to support his administration’s efforts to reform the state civil service and to abstain from all forms of corruption, emphasizing that multiple salary payments were burdening the state workforce.
“Our aim is not to victimize anyone, but rather to reform the public service and other sectors of the economy,” Governor Lawal assured.
He also announced that his administration was in the process of verifying the authenticity of the state and local government staff, with the goal of eliminating ghost workers, multiple salary recipients, and other irregularities. Once this process was complete, a new minimum wage would be announced.
“We have already disbursed a total of N3.841 billion for the settlement of gratuities and pension arrears for both state and local government employees. This effort will continue until all pension arrears and gratuities are completely settled,” he added.
