Zelensky directs officials’ asset declarations be opened after scandals

Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has ordered that electronic financial reports of its officials should “immediately” be made available to the public.

Zelensky has emphasised the importance of transparency during the war, with multiple corruption scandals in recent months leading to the arrest or firing of public officials.

“Declarations should be open. Immediately. Not in a year. The registry should be opened now,” Zelensky said.

Last week, a petition was signed by over 80,000 Ukrainian citizens urging President Zelensky to exercise his veto power in relation to a legislation that seeks to reinstate compulsory asset statements for government officials, while simultaneously prolonging their non-disclosure to the public for an additional year.

“These restrictions are unacceptable,” Zelensky said, asking parliament to vote on opening the registries.
