The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, an umbrella body representing youth groups across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, has criticised remarks attributed to Joe Igbokwe, who questioned Seyi Tinubu’s suitability for the governorship of Lagos State on the basis of age.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, CONYL dismissed Igbokwe’s comments as outdated and baseless, stating that age has never been the sole determinant of leadership capacity or performance.
The coalition praised Seyi Tinubu’s accomplishments as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, asserting that his track record demonstrates his readiness to deliver in public office.
“Seyi Tinubu is not a boy but a man, fully prepared and capable of delivering. His governorship ambition is not a distraction to President Bola Tinubu but rather a testament to his dedication to public service,” the statement read.
CONYL further addressed Igbokwe’s skepticism by citing examples of successful young leaders globally and in Nigeria. It referenced figures like Thomas W. Bartley, who became Governor of Ohio at 32, and Harold Stassen, elected Governor of Minnesota at a young age, both known for their exceptional governance.
In the Nigerian context, the coalition pointed to General Yakubu Gowon, who became Head of State at 31, leading significant national progress, including establishing critical infrastructure still in use today.
“These examples demonstrate that young leaders can bring innovation and progress to governance. The ‘Not Too Young to Run’ bill, signed into law in 2018, underscores this fact, empowering capable young Nigerians to take up leadership roles,” CONYL stated.
The coalition emphasised Seyi Tinubu’s strong support among Lagosians, including residents and business owners, citing his forward-thinking and philanthropic contributions as evidence of his leadership capabilities.
“The people of Lagos State recognize and appreciate Mr. Seyi Tinubu’s contributions. He has proven himself to be a capable leader, ready to serve, irrespective of his age,” the statement added.
CONYL urged Joe Igbokwe to reconsider his position and avoid undermining young leaders with unfounded criticism.
“Joe Igbokwe’s views are outdated and irrelevant in today’s Nigeria. The youth have taken their destiny into their own hands, driven by a desire for positive change. Age does not determine performance—capacity, vision, and action do. Seyi Tinubu has demonstrated these qualities beyond doubt,” the statement added.
