In compliance with the recent Supreme Court ruling that declared caretaker committees illegal, the 401 members of the Caretaker Committees of Local Government Councils in Osun State have tendered their resignations.
The mass resignation comes six days after the Supreme Court’s verdict, which deemed the use of caretaker committees to run local governments unconstitutional.
The development was confirmed by Sarafadeen Awotunde, a former Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria in Osun State. Awotunde stated that all 69 caretaker committee chairmen and 332 members from wards across the state have stepped down, effective immediately.
Two chairmen, Adewale Adeyinka of Odo-Otin Local Government Area and Moshood Adekunle (also known as Irorun) of Iwo Local Government Area, have publicly confirmed their resignations. In their respective letters and statements, they expressed their gratitude to Governor Ademola Adeleke and the people of their local government areas for their support during their tenure.
Adeyinka’s resignation letter, dated July 17, 2024, read: “I hope this letter finds you well. It is with a sense of duty and respect for our democratic principles that I write to tender my resignation from my position as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee for Odo-Otin Local Government, effective immediately… I remain committed to supporting the growth and development of Odo-Otin Local Government in any capacity I can.”
Adekunle’s statement expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve and pledged his continued support for the development of Iwo Local Government Area.
The mass resignation marks a significant shift in the state’s local government administration, as the caretaker committees were established to manage the councils pending the conduct of elections.
