Peru’s leftist president, Pedro Castillo, has been impeached by lawmakers and arrested on Wednesday in a twisted series of events.
A 60-year-old lawyer, Dina Boluarte, has been sworn in as Peru’s first female president to replace Castillo, according to The PUNCH.
Castillo was impeached because of his efforts to dissolve the Congress, a move which the lawmakers criticised and termed as an attempted coup.
In a televised address to the nation, the 53-year-old announced that he was dissolving the opposition-dominated Congress, installing a curfew, and would rule by decree.
Castillo was a former rural school teacher who unexpectedly won power from Peru’s traditional political ruler in a 2021 election.
