A group of federal lawmakers from opposition parties in the National Assembly under the aegis of the G60 has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to organize bye-elections to fill the 27 vacant seats left by the former members of the State House of Assembly.
The group also commended the election of Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo as the new speaker of the Rivers State Assembly.
Recall that Jumbo, representing Bonny LGA constituency, emerged after the resignation of Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, now the Chief of Staff to the state government, and the declaration of 27 seats vacant due to members’ defection from PDP to APC, according to NaijaNews.
In a statement, the group’s spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, expressed confidence in the new speaker and urged him to work with Governor Siminalayi Fubara to deliver democratic dividends to the people of Rivers.
The lawmakers saw Jumbo’s appointment as an end to political chaos and legislative misconduct by former House members.
The group called on the Governor to initiate legal action against the ousted lawmakers for impersonation and urged INEC to promptly organize bye-elections to fill the 27 vacant seats.
