The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission has rescheduled the local government area elections to August 17, 2024.
This announcement was made by the Executive Chairman of BASIEC, Ahmed Makama, in a statement released on Friday.
Initially, the elections were slated for August 10, 2024. However, Makama stated that the original date could not be maintained due to unspecified reasons.
He urged political parties and other stakeholders to take note of the new date and to prepare their internal mechanisms accordingly.
The background to this development is significant. After the expiration of the tenure of the previously elected chairmen and councilors in 2020, all 20 local government chairmen and vice chairmen in Bauchi State have been serving in an interim capacity.
This election is crucial as it aims to restore elected leadership to these Local Government Areas.
