President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States Authority of Heads of States and Government for a second one-year term.
Tinubu’s first term, which began last July, is set to conclude on July 9, 2024. His re-election was confirmed by a unanimous decision from fellow Heads of Government during the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority, which took place at the State House in Abuja on Sunday.
In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu expressed his commitment to continue the work begun during his first term. “I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interest and build democratic values on the structure we inherited,” he said.
The re-election decision was foreshadowed by a source close to the Presidency, who had indicated on Saturday night that Tinubu was likely to be re-elected for another term. “Some people say he should hand over, and others say he should continue. But they will decide tomorrow,” the source, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed.
Tinubu first assumed the role of Chairman at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, in July 2023.
