The Katsina State Police Command has initiated enforcement of a 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma Local Government Area and a 7pm to 7am curfew in the other 33 local government areas, following a directive from the state government.
This comes after violent protests erupted statewide on Thursday.
According to Police Public Relations Officer Abubakar Sadiq, “The 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma Local Government Area is essential for public safety and to prevent further violence, vandalism, and looting of public and private properties. The 7pm to 7am curfew in the rest of the state aims to curb nocturnal criminal activities and maintain law and order.”
Sadiq confirmed that approximately 50 individuals were arrested in connection with the destruction and looting of properties during Thursday’s protests, but no fatalities were reported. He urged parents to advise their children against participating in unlawful activities and called on youths to avoid being manipulated into committing acts of violence.
The police command, in cooperation with other security agencies, will conduct regular patrols to enforce the curfew. Sadiq warned that those found violating the curfew would face strict penalties.
“We appeal to the public to cooperate with security agencies and remain indoors during the curfew hours. Let’s work together to maintain peace and order in our state,” Sadiq concluded.
