The Senate has reconstituted its ad hoc committee to investigate alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum industry.
Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, announced the decision on Thursday.
The reconstitution follows a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, calling for a joint probe with the House of Representatives. Bamidele emphasized the need for collaboration to avoid duplication of efforts.
The committee, now renamed the National Assembly Joint Ad hoc Committee to Investigate Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry, will be chaired by Bamidele. Other members include Senators Ekpenyong, Yahaya Abdullahi, Mohammed Monguno, and Solomon Olamilekan.
Mr Bamidele called for the reconstitution of the committee to be named “National Assembly Joint Ad hoc Committee to Investigate Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.”
After Mr Bamidele’s presentation, the Senate recaptioned the title to “National Assembly Joint Ad hoc Committee to Investigate Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.”
The Senate resolved to communicate its decision to the House of Representatives to constitute an equal number of members for the joint committee. This move aims to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the petroleum industry, according to Peoples Gazette.
The investigation was initially prompted by a motion moved by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong on July 3, regarding the importation of hazardous petroleum products and substandard diesel into Nigeria.
With the reconstituted committee, the Senate demonstrates its commitment to addressing economic sabotage in the petroleum industry. The joint investigation with the House of Representatives is expected to provide workable solutions to the industry’s challenges.
