Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yechiel Leiter, a former senior official in Israel’s Finance Ministry, as the next Israeli ambassador to the United States.
In a statement on Friday, Netanyahu praised Leiter for his diplomatic acumen, communication skills, and profound understanding of American culture and politics.
“Yechiel Leiter is a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and possesses a deep understanding of American culture and politics,” Netanyahu stated.
Leiter brings a wealth of government experience to his new role. He has served as chief of staff in Israel’s Finance Ministry, deputy director general of the Education Ministry, and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company.
Additionally, Leiter has a personal connection to Israel’s military, as his son lost his life in the 2023 Gaza conflict while serving in the Israeli Defense Forces.
Leiter’s appointment has received positive reactions from different sectors of Israeli society. Yisrael Ganz, head of the Yesha Council, which represents Jewish settlements in the West Bank, voiced his support, acknowledging Leiter’s longstanding advocacy for Jewish communities in the area.
Leiter, who resides in Gush Etzion in the West Bank, is expected to maintain strong Israeli-American ties under Netanyahu’s leadership. His appointment may reflect the government’s stance on issues such as Israeli settlements and the future of Palestinian territories.
This announcement comes shortly after Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election—a win celebrated in Israel due to Trump’s pro-Israel stance and history of support for the country.
