The Nigeria Labour Congress has called off its planned strike in Akwa Ibom State following Governor Umo Eno’s approval of a new minimum wage agreement with organised labour ahead of the deadline.
The Chairman of NLC Akwa Ibom, Sunny James, announced the development in Uyo on Wednesday, confirming that the state government has agreed to pay a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 starting from November 1, 2024. Additionally, monthly pensions for retirees have been increased by ₦32,000.
James stated, “Following the signing of the New Minimum Wage Agreement on December 3, 2024, between the Government of Akwa Ibom and Organized Labour, we notify workers that the State Government has agreed to pay ₦80,000 as directed by Governor Eno.
“Since November 2024 salaries have already been paid, the differential arrears will be settled on or before the end of February 2025. December 2024 salaries will reflect the agreed new wage.”
The agreement also ensures that retirees will benefit from the improved package, in line with a circular issued on September 27 by the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission.
The NLC expressed appreciation to Governor Eno for his prompt intervention, highlighting that workers are committed to enhancing productivity and service delivery as a gesture of gratitude for the government’s action.
With this resolution, the indefinite strike scheduled to commence on December 4, 2024, has been suspended, and workers have been directed to resume duties immediately.
