The Peoples Democratic Party Imo State chapter has called for an immediate investigation into the killing of its legal adviser in Oru West Local Government Area, Chinedu Nwowu, who was murdered by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday, January 22, at Mgbidi.
In a statement, the PDP condemned the brutal murder of Nwowu, describing the assassination as a reflection of an increasingly unsafe environment where human life is no longer valued.
Nwowu was recognized as a dedicated and vibrant leader, who made significant contributions to the growth of the party in Oru West LGA. He was known for his mobilizing efforts and leadership qualities, earning him respect across various sectors.
The party expressed its deepest condolences to the Nwowu family and prayed for strength for those affected by this tragic loss, including party members. The PDP emphasized that Nwowu would be greatly missed by all.
The PDP called on security agencies to ensure justice for Nwowu, urging them to track down those responsible for the murder and ensure they face the full force of the law.
The party pointed out that Nwowu’s death highlights the escalating insecurity in the state, where criminal elements, including hoodlums, assassins, terrorists, and kidnappers, continue to operate with impunity. The statement also referenced a series of coordinated killings in Orsu Local Government Area, where 27 people were killed by unknown gunmen, including nine men who were murdered in a shop.
The PDP expressed concern that such incidents have become a recurring issue in Imo State since 2020, and called on the state government led by Governor Hope Uzodinma to take decisive action. The party criticized the government for its failure to protect the lives and property of Imo citizens, despite having access to substantial security funds and resources.
The PDP emphasized that the government could no longer afford to ignore its responsibility to safeguard the people of Imo State.
“The party uses this medium to commiserate with the entire Nwowu family over the tragic and irreparable loss, and pray the almighty God to grant the deceased’s soul eternal rest as well as give everyone affected by the great loss, including members of our party, the fortitude to bear it. we will surely miss him.
“Importantly, we call on the security agencies to ensure justice for the slain legal luminary by doing everything to fish out the perpetrators and bring them under the full weight of the law.
“PDP notes that Barr. Nwowu’s death, regrettably, calls to mind the insecurity ravaging the State, a situation where hoodlums, assassins, terrorists and kidnappers have continued to prowl confidently.
“Sadly, in the same month Barr. Nwowu was attacked and killed, unknown gunmen in one day killed no fewer than 27 people in coordinated attacks in Amaebu, Awo-Idemili, Eziawa, Umuhu-Okabia communities in Orsu Local Government Area of the State. This includes the butchering of 9 men in a shop, leaving them in the pool of their blood,” the party said.
“The Government cannot continue to sit comfortably on its unprecedented failure to protect the lives and property of Imo citizens despite the huge security votes and other resources at its disposal,” the release further stated.
