An aspirant for the chairmanship position in Ijede Local Council Development Area, Oluwatosin Onamade, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in Lagos State on Saturday night.
The incident took place in Ijede, Ikorodu.
Onamade’s brother, Oluwafemi, confirmed the tragic news, stating that his brother had been followed by the assailants for some time before the attack.
Femi explained that the gunmen, dressed in black and with their faces covered, first shot at Onamade. When the bullets failed to penetrate his body, the attackers then used machetes to strike his head and face.
Femi mentioned that the attack occurred around 9 pm, with two gunmen involved. He said the gunmen were wearing black outfits, making it difficult for anyone to identify them. Femi also revealed that Onamade’s aide had heard gunshots and could not wait when he saw the attack take place. The assault happened in front of Onamade’s house, located on a street named after him—Oluwatosin Onamade Street in Ijede.
Femi further suggested that the attack was politically motivated, as Onamade’s opponents were reportedly aware of his likely success in the upcoming chairmanship election.
He said, “It happened around 9 pm on Saturday. There were two gunmen. They were wearing black outfits and no one could recognise them.
“His aide said he could not wait when he heard gunshots. They shot at him and macheted him in front of his house. It happened at his house in Ijede, Oluwatosin Onamade Street. The street is named after him.
“They shot him. When the bullets did not penetrate in time, they used machetes on his head and face,” he said.
Speaking further, he said his brother was killed by his opponents who knew that he would win the chairmanship position ahead of them.
He also noted that a similar attack has been launched against his late brother in 2021.
“An attack had been made in 2021 and some of the culprits are still in prison but judgment has not been made yet,” Femi said.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin said an investigation has been launched into the matter.
Hundeyin said, “Investigation has commenced into the incident.”
