The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, arrived in Bauchi State on Thursday for a meeting with Governor Bala Mohammed.
While the purpose of the visit remains unclear, both politicians are currently holding a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Bauchi. Governor Mohammed, who also serves as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, is expected to brief journalists alongside Obi after the meeting.
Peter Obi emerged as a major force in the 2023 presidential election, securing significant support, particularly among young voters and urban populations. However, the election saw former Lagos State governor and All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Tinubu, clinch victory with 8,794,726 votes.
Tinubu won in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states, defeating his closest rival, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who polled 6,984,520 votes. Obi finished third with 6,101,533 votes but achieved a remarkable feat by winning in 11 states, including Lagos—Tinubu’s stronghold—and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Atiku, like Tinubu, won in 12 states, leaving political analysts to speculate about possible realignments ahead of the 2027 election.
Following the 2023 election, opposition parties have intensified discussions on forming a strong coalition to challenge the APC in 2027. Atiku has been spotted in several political meetings with Obi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other key political figures, fueling speculation about a possible alliance.
