The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, overturning previous rulings that upheld his removal from office.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday by a five-member panel, the apex court ruled that issues concerning the leadership or membership of a political party are internal matters that should not be subject to judicial intervention.
The court, therefore, set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, which had on 20 December 2024 affirmed a Federal High Court ruling in Enugu that removed Anyanwu from office.
The Supreme Court further held that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the suit filed by Aniagwu Emmanuel, which led to Anyanwu’s removal.
