The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has called on traditional rulers in the state to steer clear of partisan politics and instead focus on ensuring security and stability in their communities.
Ibas, a retired Vice Admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff, made this appeal during a meeting with traditional rulers at the Government House in Port Harcourt. He expressed his deep affection for the Niger Delta region and emphasised Rivers State’s strategic importance to national development.
He lamented the persistent instability in the state, stating that it pained him to witness the ongoing unrest.
“As a former naval chief, my duty is to protect lives, and I remain committed to restoring peace in Rivers State,” Ibas said.
He assured the traditional rulers that his administration would work tirelessly to restore stability and reclaim the state’s position as a place of pride.
Ibas reiterated that his primary mandate was to restore peace and warned against individuals prioritising personal interests over the collective good of the state. He stressed the importance of order in ensuring progress.
“A society without order is a society without progress,” he stated.
The administrator urged the royal fathers to remain neutral in political matters, avoiding any form of partisanship in their speech, actions, or body language. He reminded them of their role in community policing and encouraged them to maintain open communication channels with their subjects.
“Security is the responsibility of all, not just the government,” he said, adding that his administration would not tolerate excuses for disorder.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Ibas reaffirmed his government’s openness to suggestions and collaboration in the effort to stabilise the state.
In response, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Chike Worlu-Wodo, assured the administrator of their full support. He described Ibas’ appointment as a positive step for the state and affirmed the commitment of traditional rulers to peacebuilding.
“As traditional rulers, our primary duty is to ensure peace in our kingdoms, clans, and communities,” he said.
He urged Ibas to embrace his role as a peacemaker, likening his position to that of a mediator resolving conflicts.
The monarch wished him success in his mission, stressing that Rivers State desperately needed peace.
“We are not in doubt of your ability, which was why you were appointed,” he stated.
