The newly appointed Controller of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Abia State, Mr. Henry Onyenze, has appealed to the state government for additional resources to enhance the operations of the service.
Onyenze made the request during a courtesy visit to the Governor’s office in Umuahia, where he called for the provision of operational vehicles, palliative measures, and the construction of new court cells.
In addition to these requests, Onyenze also advocated for the installation of solar-powered lights in custodial facilities across the state.
He emphasized that improved lighting would not only enhance security but also promote the safety of both inmates and NCS staff, according to Daily Post
Onyenze expressed his gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for his ongoing support, which he said had significantly contributed to the service’s ability to maintain safe, secure, and humane custody for inmates in Abia.
Governor Otti, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, acknowledged the vital role the Nigeria Correctional Service plays in the rehabilitation and reintegration of citizens.
He assured Onyenze that his administration would continue to support the service in fulfilling its duties. Otti also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to assisting all security agencies in the state.
During the meeting, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, represented by Mrs. Chibuzor Ehiemere, Director of Public Prosecution, also spoke on the issue of overcrowding in correctional facilities. Uwanna expressed his office’s readiness to review lists for amnesty, which could help alleviate congestion.
He noted that overcrowding remains one of the primary challenges facing the justice system and decongesting the facilities would be a significant step toward resolving this issue.
