The Police have summoned the Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja, to appear at the Force Headquarters on September 5, 2024.
This is the second time Ajaero has been summoned by the police, following an earlier invitation on August 19, 2024, over alleged criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
The latest summons, signed by Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ibitoye Alajide, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, Abuja, accuses Ajaero and Ugboaja of criminal intimidation, conducts likely to cause a breach of public peace, and malicious damage to property.
Ajaero had earlier honoured the police’s invitation on August 29, 2024, accompanied by his lawyers, including Femi Falana, Maxwell Opara, and Deji Adeyanju, and Labour leaders. Addressing journalists after the meeting, Ajaero insisted that the Labour movement could not be intimidated, describing the allegations against him as “baseless”.
He stated, “We can’t be intimidated. The allegations against us are baseless, and we have nothing to hide.” Ajaero maintained that the NLC remains committed to defending the rights of Nigerian workers and would not be cowed by any form of intimidation.
He added, “Our resolve is stronger than ever. We will continue to champion the cause of workers across the nation, no matter the obstacles.”
