The Anambra State Executive Council has approved over ₦1 billion for the installation of solar-powered street lights across Awka Metropolis, as part of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and public services across the state.
In a landmark decision, contracts for the solar lighting project were awarded to three companies: VIGEO-DOME LTD received ₦460.7 million, tasked with completing the project within three months; FRANKTORCH NIG LTD was awarded ₦385.6 million to deliver 346 solar-powered street lights in two months; Conifer Konstruction Nig Ltd secured ₦200 million for the production and installation of 500 fluorescent “Solution Is Here” concrete signage to brand and highlight key infrastructure.
The council also prioritised education, approving ₦228.1 million for the rehabilitation of the vandalised substation at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam campus. The contract was awarded to Kohl Ventures to ensure the institution’s energy needs are restored.
In a move to boost local commerce, Crystal Dove Construction Company was contracted to construct 151 open stalls at Afuzo Market in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area. This initiative is expected to provide enhanced trading facilities and promote economic activity in the region.
The health sector received a major boost with the approval of a project for the supply and installation of modern medical equipment at the Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, and General Hospital, Anaku. The contract for this vital upgrade was awarded to CHRISLAUG LTD.
Road safety and aesthetics were not left out, as the council approved the road-marking of the Amawbia flyover motorway and adjoining roads. The project, valued at ₦118.7 million, was awarded to Allpee International Ltd, with a completion timeline of six weeks.
As part of its economic reforms, the government announced tax exemptions for businesses with capital below ₦100,000, offering relief to small-scale entrepreneurs. In addition, sanitation duties were delegated to local governments, reinforcing the state’s commitment to cleaner cities and towns.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration also emphasised the need for private sector involvement in public enterprise management. Investors were encouraged to explore leasing and concession arrangements, which the government sees as a more efficient alternative to direct control.
The council reminded residents to comply with anti-touting laws, while highlighting the state’s ongoing empowerment schemes designed to improve livelihoods and foster economic growth.
