Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hailed Ushie Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps member based in Lagos, for her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Atiku described Uguamaye, also known as Raye, as a symbol of a new generation of politically engaged women dedicated to advocacy and democratic participation.
Atiku’s remarks came after Raye shared a viral video on her TikTok account, #talktoraye, in which she expressed frustration over Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
In the video, she labelled President Tinubu a “terrible leader” and questioned the government’s commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by citizens.
Following the video’s release, Raye revealed that NYSC officials had instructed her to remove the video, and she claimed to have received threats in connection with her statements.
On Sunday, Atiku took to his X handle to praise Raye’s courage. He wrote, “Raye embodies the spirit of a new generation of women who champion the ideals of popular participation and unwavering advocacy in the political sphere. I deeply admire her boldness and wisdom—her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by the weight of opposition.”
Atiku further compared Raye to historic female activists such as Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo, who played significant roles in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
The former presidential candidate also called for support for Raye, urging Nigerians to encourage, not oppose, her efforts. “Rather than being met with hostility, Raye deserves encouragement and support. She is a shining emblem of the Nigerian youth—a testament to the long-held promise that the leaders of tomorrow are already among us, ready to shape a better future,” Atiku stated.
