Bayelsa state will on April 6, 2024, hold a council election across all the local government areas in the state.
April 6th date was fixed by the Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission for the conduct of the elections, following the tenure of the elected local government chairmen and councillors in the state, which expired in early 2022, and the affairs of the local councils have been managed by caretaker committees.
Disclosing this after a meeting with political stakeholders at the commission’s office in Yenagoa, the state BYSIEC Chairman, Peter Singabele said they could not conduct the council election in 2022 because their timetable clashed with that of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the general election.
According to Singabele, the Commission started its preparation with the stakeholders in order to give them firm assurance that BYSIEC is prepared for the election.
Speaking during the meeting, the participating political parties at the meeting expressed the desire of stakeholders from the eight local government areas and 105 wards in the state to have elected officials running the affairs of the councils.
