Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, has alleged that recent visits by prominent northern politicians to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, are part of a plot to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2027.
The visits, including those by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, were reported by The PUNCH. These politicians paid Sallah homage to Buhari, who handed over power to Tinubu after the 2023 presidential election.
According to Sani, who is also an activist, these northern figures aim to revive Buhari’s political influence and mobilize support against Tinubu in the next election cycle. He criticized this move as a misguided attempt to exploit northern sentiment without addressing the region’s genuine challenges.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Sani cautioned northerners against falling for what he described as a futile political maneuver. He urged them to reject the agenda of these politicians, whom he accused of having squandered previous opportunities in power.
“The recent visits by some prominent Northern politicians to Daura appear to be ordinary Eid homage, but beneath the surface, it’s a covert effort to consolidate Northern political forces under Buhari’s banner to challenge and replace President Tinubu in 2027,” Sani wrote.
He highlighted concerns about the legacy of Buhari’s presidency, criticizing the administration for exacerbating poverty and insecurity in the North. Sani warned that attempts to stoke northern grievances for political gain could destabilize the country and undermine democratic norms.
Sani also emphasized that while criticism of Tinubu’s government is legitimate, exploiting regional sentiments to achieve political goals is reckless and divisive. He urged northerners to reject such manipulations and focus on issues that truly matter to their welfare and development.
“Their obsession with power is condemnable,” Sani asserted. “Opposition to Tinubu based on policies and programs is democratic, but using northern sentiments to advance personal agendas is perilous.”
He concluded with a call for vigilance among northern citizens, urging them not to be swayed by empty promises or political theatrics.
