Chadian Prime Minister Succes Masra announced his resignation just over two weeks after losing to junta chief Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno in the presidential elections.
“I’ve just submitted my resignation and that of the transition government, which became irrelevant with the end of the presidential election,” Masra said on his Facebook page in a message authenticated by his team to AFP on Wednesday.
The resignation, Masra noted, was in accordance with the constitution.
Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, 40, assumed the role of transitional president in April 2021 after his father, long-time president Idriss Deby Itno, was killed by rebels following three decades in power. Deby was appointed by a junta composed of 15 generals.
In the May 6 presidential vote, Deby secured 61 percent of the vote, according to final results.
Masra, who is also 40, was once a staunch opponent of Deby before taking on the role of prime minister four months ago. He garnered 18.5 percent of the vote but disputed the outcome.
Masra claimed he had actually won the election, which his party labeled a “masquerade.” International rights groups had similarly criticized the election, predicting it would be neither credible nor fair.
