Members of Niger’s elite Presidential Guard have barred visitors from entering Niger Republic President, Mohamed Bazoum home and offices.
This was disclosed by a source close to Bazoum , who didn’t also failed to give the reason for the development.
Since gaining independence from France in 1960, the landlocked West African nation has experienced four coups and countless additional attempts to seize power, making it one of the most unstable countries in the world.
An AFP journalist observed that Bazoum’s official residence and offices in the Niamey presidential complex were both blocked off, despite the fact that there was no unusual military deployment, no gunshots could be heard nearby, and traffic was as usual.
Bazoum is a loyal supporter of France and was democratically elected in 2021.
In February 2010, the nation had its most recent coup, which removed President Mamadou Tandja.
However, a security source at the time stated that a putsch attempt occurred on March 31, 2021, just two days before Bazoum was inaugurated.
Sani Gourouza, an air force captain who is thought to be the ringleader, was among the many people detained.
He was taken into custody in the nearby country of Benin and turned over to Niger authorities.
