A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a restraining order against the Peoples Democratic Party governors, National Working Committee, and Board of Trustees from dissolving the Rivers State Executive Committee.
Justice Peter Lifu granted the order on Wednesday, following an ex-parte application filed by the committee’s leader, Aaron Chukwuemeka, and other local government and ward executives.
The court’s decision bars the PDP from interfering with the Rivers State Executive Committee, which is comprised of loyalists to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, according to Daily Post.
Wike is currently engaged in a supremacy battle with Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara.
The plaintiffs alleged that the defendants were making clandestine moves to dissolve the legally constituted committees.
Justice Lifu’s ruling also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting or recognizing any other persons or groups aside from those elected during the recent PDP congress in Rivers State.
The court has scheduled a hearing for October 4, 2024, and ordered the plaintiffs to file a fresh undertaking to indemnify the defendants in case the restraining orders are deemed unnecessary.
