The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Elvert Ayambem, has been impeached by his fellow lawmakers.
Ayambem’s impeachment occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, following allegations of gross misconduct and administrative high-handedness. Discontent with Ayambem’s leadership style had been simmering for months, with many assembly members expressing dissatisfaction with his conduct and methods.
By Tuesday, more than 20 members had signed a petition supporting his removal. The motion to impeach Ayambem was introduced on the House floor by Hon. Effiong Ekarika, who represents Calabar South 1, and was seconded by Hon. Charles Omang.
Following the impeachment, members of the assembly took away the mace, symbolizing the seriousness and finality of their decision.
