Businessman and socialite Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, has voiced his support for former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha’s appeal to the Federal Government for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Cubana Chief Priest shared a video of Okorocha’s tribute to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. During the tribute, Okorocha urged the government to free Kanu as the “best way” to honour Ubah’s legacy.
Adding his voice to the plea, Cubana Chief Priest stated that Kanu’s release would foster peace and unity in the Southeast.
He tagged Senate President Godswill Akpabio in his post, writing, “Those pleas from Owelle Ndi Igbo are all we ask for our dear in-law. Let Ohamadike Ndi Igbo, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, come back home soon.”
The socialite lamented the adverse effects of Kanu’s detention on the Igbo community, particularly the restrictions on accessing their hometowns and the ongoing instability in the region.
“It’s been almost five years now; we still cannot access our hometown. Only his release can restore peace to our region,” he wrote. “We have lost many lives and properties. We need to rebuild the South-East ASAP. Make una help us.”
Cubana Chief Priest’s remarks echo Okorocha’s appeal made during a night of tribute in Abuja, where he called on Akpabio to convey the message to the Federal Government. Okorocha had emphasized that Kanu’s release would help reunite the Igbo people and address ongoing regional challenges.
Since Kanu’s arrest in June 2021, his detention has remained a focal point of agitation for Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and his supporters, who have consistently called for his freedom.
The renewed calls for Kanu’s release come amidst efforts to address the socio-political and economic issues affecting the Southeast, with stakeholders urging reconciliation and development.
