Some aides to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State have resigned in order to participate in the upcoming July 13 council elections in the state.
So far, one commissioner and one special adviser have already resigned due to their interest in the polls.
However, another perspective suggests that their resignation might have been influenced by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s directive.
Reportedly, the governor instructed commissioners and political office holders with vested interests to step down from their positions.
Among the notable resignations is that of the Commissioner for Technical Education, Joan Onyemaechi. Onyemaechi decided to resign because her younger brother is contesting the chairmanship of Aniocha South Local Government Area.
Onyemaechi faced controversy as the Nsukwa clan accused her of monopolizing political offices within her family.
The governor’s special adviser on transport and coordinator of palliatives from Ughelli North LGA, Jaro Egbon, is also stepping down from his position to contest the elections.
It is believed that the governor specifically instructed him to contest the local polls to counter the influence of the All Progressive Congress governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Ovie Omo-Agege.
Another commissioner who is said to have resigned is the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Vincent Oyibode.
When contacted, Oyibode denied reports of his resignation, stating that he was not aware of any directive from the governor regarding the council polls.
