The Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, Barrister Olumide Akpata, visited the Home of the Needy IDP camp in Uhogua, Ovia North East Local Government Area, promising scholarships to pupils and students in the camp.
The camp houses over 4,000 Internally Displaced Persons from North Eastern Nigeria, displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency.
Akpata donated food and confectionary items to the IDPs and expressed disappointment at their plight, tendering an apology on behalf of Nigeria.
He urged eligible voters in the camp to reject the People’s Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress in the upcoming governorship election, promising that the Labour Party would rescue Edo State and Nigeria, according to Independent.
He said, “Today God has brought me to this camp and has added me to the friends of the camp and supporters of the camp. I want to say to you as an individual I will support this camp.
“For those of you with voters card, if as an individual I am ready to support you now, you can imagine when Labour party is in power. For those of you, who will vote, let us vote to change the situation in Edo State and Nigeria.
“We will find a way to support the camp. I must sponsor some children here to school because education is light and freedom. I have been a lawyer since I was twenty one years old and I will give scholarships to this camp.”
The camp’s coordinator, Pastor Solomon Folorunsho, thanked Akpata for his visit and donation.
Recently, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, a member of the federal House of Representatives and running mate to the APC Governorship candidate, also donated educational materials to the camp.
Akpata’s visit and promises aim to alleviate the suffering of the IDPs and provide hope for a better future through education.
His commitment to supporting the camp and sponsoring scholarships demonstrates the Labour Party’s focus on the welfare of the downtrodden.
