There have been conflicting results of Saturday’s primary election of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State.
Confusion emerged when a governorship aspirant of the APC, Senator Monday Okpebholo was declared winner of the Saturday exercise.
Okpebholo’s declaration came just after Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State who heads the APC election committee for the State, announced Dennis Idahosa as the winner of the poll.
Confirming the declaration via his X handle on Saturday, the Imo governor tweeted: “I was delighted to announce Hon. Dennis Idahosa @IdahosaDennis as the winner of our peacefully conducted Governorship Primaries in Benin City. His resounding victory, marked by the highest vote count, reflects the trust and confidence our party members have in his leadership.
However, the APC State Returning Officer Ogbuaja Stanley Uzoamaka also declared Senator Okpebholo as the winner of the exercise held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Saturday.
A group had dismissed Uzodimma’s declaration, maintaining that the Imo governor’s post is only ceremonial.
Premium Politics reported earlier that the election was marred by disruption from suspected thugs who stormed the results collation venue in the GRA area of Edo State.
It was reported that APC officials and pressmen present at the collation centre, scampered for safety when the incident happened.
However, the drama forced the election officials to change the venue of the collation exercise.
Meanwhile, Governor Uzodimma explained that there was a mixup about the collation venue, maintaining that his declaration of Idahosa as the winner of the election was done in the right venue.
