The Edo State Civil Society Organizations has issued a pressing call to action to the Independent National Electoral Commission and its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to ensure a free, fair, and credible governorship election in Edo State on September 21.
This appeal, made by Coordinator General Comrade Omobude Agho, emphasizes the crucial role INEC plays in restoring public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Agho stressed that anything less than a credible election would discourage citizens from participating in future elections. He urged INEC to seize this opportunity to redeem its image, citing previous questionable election outcomes.
“The continuity of this democracy in Nigeria going forward rests on his shoulders as the head of the commission,” Agho said, adding, “An umpire must be neutral, just, fair, and trustworthy to earn the confidence of the people.”
EDOCSO commended Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for temporarily banning the Edo State Security Network but cautioned security agencies to remain impartial and protect citizens without bias.
Agho emphasized, “They must do everything within their powers to protect and defend our democracy… and strongly adhere to respect for human rights and dignity throughout this election period.”
In a final appeal, Agho encouraged Edo citizens to vote without coercion or emotional influence, considering their future and that of their children. He also urged young men to resist being exploited as thugs by self-serving politicians, instead embracing their roles as honorable citizens of Nigeria.
