The Independent National Electoral Commission in Edo presented soft copies of the voters register to political parties participating in the September 21 governorship election on Tuesday.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, presented the register to party officials at the INEC office in Benin.
Onuoha stated: “The register will be presented to the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Olumide Akpata, as the sole candidate of the party in the election.”
He explained that Akpata was given the register due to the leadership crisis in the Labour Party in Edo.
The National INEC Commissioner supervising Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa, Prof. Rhoda Gamus, said: “A total of 2,629,025 voters registered for the governorship election in Edo.”
Gamus urged party leaders to mobilize their supporters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards.
Mr. Olatunde Olalere, Director of Voter Registry, provided details about the register, stating: “The register has 1,370,061 males and 1,258,964 female voters.”
He added: “8,847 PVCs were transferred from other states to Edo, while 109 voters transferred their PVCs from Edo to Ondo State.”
Olalere noted that Ikpoba Okha and Oredo local governments have the highest number of voters, while Igueben Local Government has the lowest figure.
Earlier, the REC briefed journalists on the distribution of PVCs and progress toward the conduct of the governorship election.
