The African Democratic Congress has asserted that its candidate for the upcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21, Derek Izedonmwen, is the rightful successor to Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The ADC contends that the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who has been involved in government for the past 16 years, offers nothing new to the state.
During a town hall meeting organized by the ADC in the Edo South Senatorial District in Benin City, Izedonmwen criticized Governor Obaseki’s attempt to hand over power to Ighodalo, who has been a key member of the Edo State Economic Team for 16 years.
Izedonmwen expressed his disapproval, stating that it was inappropriate for Obaseki to treat the governorship as a birthright that can be transferred to a close ally after completing his term.
He stated, “We don’t have godfathers. We’ll serve the people. I want to be in government to empower Edo people and not just for the title. They see Edo as a birthright, which should be given to somebody who has been an adviser in the last 16 years. Edo State is not for sale.”
Izedonmwen further articulated his vision for the state, emphasizing his commitment to rapid industrialization and transformation of Edo into Nigeria’s entrepreneurial hub. He envisions a secure state bustling with innovation, where businesses thrive and opportunities are abundant. He stressed that this vision is essential and achievable, promising a brighter future for all.
“This vision is not just a dream; it’s a necessity that is achievable and a promise of a brighter future for all,” he reiterated.
Supported by key party members, including State Chairman Mr. Ken Odion and State Woman Leader Mrs. Faith Ebodaghe, Izedonmwen condemned the practice of money politics. He acknowledged that the ADC cannot match the financial power of the APC and PDP, which he alleged are fueled by billions of ill-gotten wealth. Nonetheless, he encouraged party faithful to accept any money offered by these parties, as it rightfully belongs to the people, but to vote for the ADC. He confidently predicted his victory in the election.
In his campaign, Izedonmwen also pledged to prioritize women’s roles in his administration. He promised to allocate key positions to women, recognizing them as good managers of homes who deserve a special bureau, alongside youths, to address their specific needs and affairs.
