The Edo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Asue Ighodalo, has found himself at the center of a controversy involving the impeachment of the former deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
The controversy began when Philip Shaibu was impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly following disagreements with Governor Godwin Obaseki. The impeachment was a result of allegations of misconduct, including the leaking of sensitive government information.
This political rift culminated in Shaibu’s removal from office, which he contested, claiming that the process was marred by irregularities and political machinations.
Amidst these turbulent events, Shaibu leveled accusations against Ighodalo, suggesting that he played a role in the impeachment proceedings.
In response, Ighodalo’s Media Office released a statement on Monday to address these allegations.
The statement maintained Ighodalo’s innocence, asserting, “It is necessary, for the record, to state in no uncertain terms that Mr. Asue Ighodalo has had no role or involvement in any form whatsoever in the very public process leading to Mr. Shuaibu’s impeachment and subsequent removal from office by the Edo State House of Assembly.”
The statement further defended Ighodalo’s position, stating, “These claims are completely without merit, and Mr. Ighodalo categorically denies any such involvement. These allegations are a clear attempt to unjustly tarnish his reputation and divert attention from the actual issues at hand.”
Ighodalo’s campaign emphasized that the allegations were baseless and urged the public and media to approach them with a healthy dose of skepticism.
The campaign reassured supporters and the general public that Ighodalo remains steadfast in his commitment to addressing the pressing issues of Edo State, steering clear of distractions as he continues his bid for the governorship.
