The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is his hero in the just concluded February 25 general elections.
According to Wike, while he was speaking at an event in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Obi’s participation in the election guaranteed the emergence of a southerner as the President-elect.
The G-5 Integrity Group leader explained that states where Obi recorded victories would have been won by the Peoples Democratic Party, thereby allowing the North retain its political power.
He said, “In this election that we just did, Obi is my hero, as far as I’m concerned. If he didn’t contest, power would have remained in the North.”
Wike is the leader of the aggrieved G-5 governors of the PDP, contending against the party for selecting a Northerner as the national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu; another northerner as its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and a Northerner as its campaign council Director General, Aminu Tambuwal.
According to the group, these leadership positions should have been zoned across the different geo-political zones of the country to create a balance and ensure equity.
